Newmarket’s Station Looks Great But The Square Still Needs a Spruce Up (Photos)
Newmarket wonderful new $35m station, opening in a month, is looking great as we head for its opening on January 18.
But i still have reservations about Station Square, which is the entrance to the station, off Broadway.
It’s bad enough that commuters waiting at the flash new Newmarket station will look up at the apartments and see panties drying over the balcony.
But the new Station Square at the Broadway entrance still needs a bit of spruce up.
In the bad old days, those using the lane off Broadway for the old station had to go past a brothel.
Now, Newmarket has become Auckland’s affluent shopping locale and the fashion store headquarters and the new square leads to the multi-million dollar new station and eventually a major electric train hub.
I’m not sure women will want to venture in at night down the narrow alleyway.
The Newmarket Business Association is proud of how the shopping centre is Auckland’s jewel in the crown and should be proud. Newmarket is the home of fashion, high quality retail like Apple clone store, Magnum Mac, and great restaurants.
So how about the association getting a few of their officials together to demand a cleanup of those tenants off the square that are letting the side down.
But maybe it will be cleaned up in time for tomorrow between 11am and 3pm, as there’ll be a celebration at Station Square and a sneak preview of the station.

Looks good, the Council is buying those buildings next to the alleyway to free up the square aren’t they..?
From what I here the council have brought them they are just designing the entrance and going through all the other stuff.
So I guess we can expect them to bowl it in a couple of years
Those apartments are an eyesore and should never have been built. Time and time again we see shoddy apartment blocks being built in prime locations-what a shame. In some ways you cant blame people for hanging out their washing. But like I said the apartments shouldnt have been there in the first place.
Im sure in time the whole area around the station will be improved. Newmarket looks stunning by the way
