Reader Daniel sent in some pictures of a Shared Space in London - Maiden Lane.
On Google Maps you can see it has gone from this
to this:
Thanks Daniel for sharing those.
Meanwhile back in our Darby St shared space….
We have gone from this:
.. to where motorists continue to treat it as a handy car park.

Did you report that parked car to Auckland Transport? Their phone number is (09) 355 3553.
@Andrew There was more than one car. I’ll continue until something is done.
I thought ours does look better
The London one has done a single car lane still with curbs.
The Auckland one is much more like the european shared spaces I’ve used
Yes I think Darby Street looks better, the London street is actually an upgraded traditional street along the lines of what has been done on Nuffield Street - it’s not a Shared Space at all.
I’ve also seen that seats and chairs have started to appear on Darby Street - I think these spaces are really going to take off in Spring. Whether a few cars park there or not, the fact is these streets are massive improvments on what we had which was a space where no one would want to do anything but pass through - the whole road was dedicated to 1 lane for cars and 2 lanes for parking.
I agree - I think Jon IS right in raising the parking issue - but we should also remember that even with that drop of bitterness in our drink, we are SO much better off here than before. Even if the street is parked “full”, there’s about half the cars there as were before.
Just called AT now as I see 3 parked cars on it now, not counting one goods truck and one tradesmans car, even tho it is past 11am.
@Andrew Good on you. I’ll continue to publish photos of parked cars.
It is already soooo much better, I love sashaying down the middle pretending not to be aware of the car dribbling along behind me….. they’ll learn I reckon. But it still won’t really work until Queen St is de-carred, not pedestrianised, but de-carred.
@ Patrick - sit down in front of them.
That Mercedes driver is acting like a BMW owner!
Also to be fair we have gone from this

That one in London (around the corner from my office) is rubbish. Take a look at Vail, Colorado for a better example of a shared space. Its a pitty that the street by the ACB was converted to take cars again.
